Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, and 3 other states account for over 85% of fresh COVID-19 cases in India


In India’s daily rise of COVID-19 cases, six states, namely Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka, which are witnessing a spurt in COVID-19 cases, are accounting for 85.51% of the total, the Union Ministry of Health said on Thursday, as on Wednesday, 17,047 new infections were recorded nationwide.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state in India by the COVID-19 pandemic, on Wednesday recorded 9,855 new cases, the highest since October 18, when it reported a daily hike of 10,259 cases. 

This was followed by Kerala that reported 2,765 new cases of coronavirus.

The tally of active coronavirus cases reached 173,413 on Thursday, comprising 1.55% of the total cases. The health ministry said, “Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh are showing a rise in active cases.”

Meanwhile, states like Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and Assam have witnessed a reduction in the active cases in the last 24 hours, the ministry said, showing the change in active cases for states and UTs in the last 24 hours.

The ministry added that during the same period, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat displayed a rise in active COVID-19 cases.

It said that that the tally of coronavirus UK, Brazil and South African mutant cases has reached 242.

On the other hand, the daily tally of recovered COVID-19 cases is steadily rising, as the total tally has surged to 10,826,075.

As of Thursday at 7 am, nationwide, over 1.66 people have received their first jab of the COVID-19 vaccine of which nearly 10 lakh doses were administered on March 3.

Besides, 89 deaths were reported in a span of 24 hours of which only six states account for 88.76 of total fatalities in the last 24 hours, with Maharashtra accounting for the maximum casualities (42).

Twenty-three states and UTs have not reported any COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours. These are Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Goa, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Puducherry, Assam, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Sikkim, Ladakh, Tripura, Andaman Nicobar Islands, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Arunachal Pradesh.
